Picbreeder News

August 1, 2011

The Picbreeder team is happy to welcome a new collaborative interactive evolutionary site, endlessforms.com, built by Jeff Clune and his team at the Creative Machines Laboratory at Cornell. EndlessForms allows users to evolve 3-d models using a Picbreeder-style interactive client. It's ability to branch new models from existing ones was also inspired by Picbreeder. Please head over to endlessforms.com and try it out. We hope Picbreeder users donate their work as generously to EndlessForms as they have to Picbreeder.

The Picbreeder team is excited to announce our recent partnership with Zazzle. Through Zazzle you'll be able to create custom merchandise with your favorite Picbreeder images. I assure you that this does not mean we are "selling out" in any way, this is actually a very important step in our research: proof of the marketability of artifacts created from artificial evolution. You can read a more detailed statement about our new partnership here. I know several of the team members are excited to purchase these products as there have been so many occasions of "Wouldn't that look cool on a shirt," and we hope you feel the same way. Zazzle offers a ton of options to customize products beyond just including the Picbreeder images, so we really encourage you to check them out. If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions just let us know in the forums or drop us an e-mail at help@picbreeder.org.

We may be a tad later than we said, but color is finally here and we think it looks great. The extended delay is related to the fact that we found a better way to color the images, and I think if you compare these two the previously posted ones, you'll agree. This represents a big step for both us and the site as a whole and we hope it means just as much to you, the users. Try it out and tell your friends: Picbreeder is in color!

I know we've said this for forever now, but color is definitely coming this month. The color version of the applet is being tested on our test server as I type, and barring any unforeseen bugs, should be ready very soon. Color makes some significant changes to how we handle things behind the scenes, so we want to be extra careful and make sure it is (mostly) bug free so you guys can enjoy an uninterrupted evolutionary experience ... or whatever. To give you an idea of what's in store, when color is implemented you'll be able to:

  • Evolve the coloring of existing images. Meaning all the awesome pictures you guys have made can become even cooler.
  • Like a color scheme, but hate the image? You can evolve the structure of an image separate from the coloring.
  • Start an image from scratch by evolving the color, the structure, or both at once.
  • Evolve in grayscale for that classic Picbreeder look.
We also have one more thing we're working that we hope you guys will like. Unfortunately that's all I can say until the details are worked out.

The first major change since Picbreeder opened to the public has launched. You may have noticed that the button that used to say "Family Tree" now says detailed view. That's because we have introduced a fun new way to browse the images on the site: a real family tree. Just go under the detailed view of an image and click the new "Family Tree" button to be taken to an interactive family tree applet. We're still planning on adding several features to it, but we think it's pretty cool right now. If you have any comments or questions about the family tree, you can post on the forums or email us at help@picbreeder.org
